"For Vegetarian, A Strange New World"

I loved this article. I think everyone who has decided to become vegetarian/vegan can relate to at least a couple things this guy wrote about. For me it was:
  • "I love my grandmother dearly, but I've learned never to accept soups from her--the murkier, the riskier--and to keep a sharp eye should we sit next to each other at restaurants" - This is how my Dad is. If he could get away with it, I could see him totally sneaking things in everything I ate. There were a few times when he suggested I eat his chicken noodle soup saying it has vegetables in it. Chicken is very stringy (shudder) and very hard to avoid in broth.
  • "scan a menu for the edible-to-me dishes" - I can scan a menu in seconds flat to find food suited to my diet. I don't even realize I do it anymore. I think it's just something all vegetarians/vegans do at a restaurant.
  • "When I tell someone about my diet, their first reaction is almost always to apologize, as if even mentioning meat to me were like telling an evangelical Christian they'd performed an abortion that morning for fun." - I've gotten a "so is it ok if I eat meat in front of you?" a couple times and it just makes me laugh. People usually look really scared of me when they ask too. Like I would condemn them or beat them with the turkey leg they are eating or something.
